Spring is in full force! We have been busy keeping up the plants and caterpillars in our classroom. Here's what we've been up to.
We each got to plant our own flower about three weeks ago. We have four different plants in our classroom which are Morning Glory, Zinnia, Marigold and Cosmos.
Our plants have grown so quickly! We observe our plants closely each day. We also have an observation journal that we write in every five days. This week we used cubes to measure how tall our plant was. The Morning Glory's are currently the tallest. We will continue to observe our plants for a few more weeks and then they will be sent home. Help your kindergartner take care of them by making sure it gets air, water and sun!
Then a week later in our classroom we got 5 painted lady caterpillars! Four of them ate and ate and grew quickly. We had one 'runt' that wasn't eating and growing as much. When the other four made a chrysalis, the runt ending up passing away. The chrysalis were moved into this net so when they turn into a butterfly they have room to move. We expect them to be a butterfly early next week and then we will be able to release them! Below is a picture of students writing in their butterfly observation journal.
In our classroom we have been learning about nonliving and living things. It has been so much fun watching living things grow right before our eyes! We also have been learning about what living things need and life cycles. Observing the plants and caterpillars has been a wonderful learning experience for us!
